Designing AI-Assisted Product Development

AI/MLWorkflowOnboardingProduct Design

As AI tools became more capable, designers across the organization were interested in using them for prototyping, documentation, and implementation support. The challenge wasn't access to tools. The challenge was creating a repeatable way for designers to learn and apply them effectively. I led an effort to create an AI-assisted prototyping environment and education program that gave designers a practical path from static design work to interactive prototypes and implementation-ready outputs.

Problem

  • →Designers had different levels of technical experience and AI familiarity.
  • →There was no standardized workflow for AI-assisted product development.
  • →Onboarding into design-to-code workflows required significant setup and coaching.
  • →Teams lacked a safe environment for experimentation and learning.

Goals

  • →Make AI-assisted prototyping more approachable for designers.
  • →Reduce onboarding effort and setup friction.
  • →Improve collaboration between design and engineering.
  • →Explore practical design-to-code workflows that could be reused across teams.

Process

Building the Environment

I created a prototyping environment that allowed designers to move beyond Figma and experiment with interactive experiences using modern development tools and AI assistance. The goal was to make experimentation accessible without requiring designers to become full-time engineers.

Creating Repeatable Workflows

As teams began using the environment, I documented setup instructions, workflows, prompts, and best practices that reduced the amount of individual coaching required.

Teaching the Team

A large portion of the work involved education. I introduced designers to AI-assisted prototyping workflows, demonstrated how emerging tools could be used effectively, and helped establish a shared understanding of where these tools added value.

Solution

AI Prototyping Environment

Established a shared environment for experimentation that lowered the barrier to creating interactive prototypes and exploring implementation concepts.

Designer Onboarding

Created onboarding materials, setup documentation, and learning resources that helped designers get started more quickly.

Reusable Workflows

Developed reusable AI-assisted workflows for prototyping, documentation, design exploration, and design-to-development collaboration.

Team Enablement

Led presentations, demonstrations, and working sessions that helped designers build confidence using new tools and workflows.

Impact

The work helped create a stronger culture of experimentation and learning within the design organization. Designers gained practical experience working with AI-assisted tools, onboarding became easier to repeat, and teams were better equipped to explore ideas beyond static designs. The initiative also helped strengthen collaboration between design and engineering by giving designers greater visibility into implementation workflows and creating a shared language around AI-assisted product development.
